Löwenstatue mit Wappen

Löwenstatue mit Wappen

Mühltorstraße 2, 18. Jh.

Lion statue with coat of arms

Mühltorstraße 2, 18th century

The upstanding lion serves as keeper of the Württemberg coat of arms. Based on the form of the coat of arms, the statue can be dated back to 1707/1785. A pencil drawing by Julius Nagel from circa 1840 shows the statue in front of the administrative office at the former convent in Lauffen on the other side of the Neckar. When the former convent was sold in 1871, the statue was probably attained by the town and henceforth it adorned the market fountain in the "Städtle". Today it stands near the former market square on a modern pedestal in front of “Winkelbau” (Mühltorstraße 2), which was built in 1984.
